Tasting Notes
Tasting Notes
The three elements work in harmony to provide a medium-bodied style of wine. There are lifted aromas of red fruits, including cherries and raspberries. The paate is smooth and round, with fine savoury tannins, and hints of chocolate and spice on the finish. Try it with dishes featuring Mediterranean herbs and spices, olives, pork belly or pasta.
The 2020 vintage
2020 was an unusual vintage. In a reversal of normal weather events, a hot and dry spring reverted to cooler weather and good rains in the latter half of the ripening season. The early heat impacted fruit-set, resulting in reduced yields, however the gentle lead-up to harvest reinvigorated the vines and gave us excellent grape quality.
The Vineyard
The Grenache and Mourvedre were sourced from the north facing block, and the Shiraz sourced from the south facing block of our Dowd’s Lane vineyard. The vines on our estate are unirrigated and very low yielding. They are cane-pruned by hand and wrapped to a single wire trellis to encourage some bunch shading during the heat of summer.
The Winemaking
The Grenache was partially fermented as whole bunches for 21 days, then foot-stomped to complete fermentation on stalks and skins. The Shiraz and Mourvèdre were fermented separately in open vats with daily hand plunging and then basket pressed. The components were aged for 22 months in old oak and blended just prior to bottling in March 2022.
