Tasting Notes
The 2019 Vintage:
2019 was a relatively warm and dry ripening season. Two significant rain events, in November and December, supplied sufficient water to ripen the vines through January and February. Harvest yields were lower than normal, however the flavours were very good.
The Vineyard:
Fruit was sourced from the Dowd’s Lane vineyard which is on the west side of the ridge, and from the Lower Vineyard on the east side. The vines are unirrigated and relatively low yielding. They are cane-pruned by hand, and wrapped to a single wire trellis to encourage some bunch shading during the heat of summer.
The Winemaking:
The grapes were picked over a range of days in early March 2019. The components were fermented separately in open fermenters. Mature oak used for aging the shiraz and mourvedre, and new oak for the tempranillo. After 22 months aging the wine was blended just prior to bottling in June 2021.
